Coming Soon: Slurm Reservations on Compute2

As high-performance computing demands at WashU continue to grow, managing compute resources effectively is key to keeping research projects on schedule. Slurm reservations allow WashU researchers to lock in dedicated Compute2 nodes with CPUs or GPUs for fixed windows. Perfect for tight deadlines, projects, or time-sensitive runs.

FAQ

How does a reservation work?

A reservation ensures your jobs are always prioritized, providing guaranteed access to resources during your scheduled window.

Are reservations customizable?

Reservations are highly flexible and can be configured to match specific needs.

What do I pay for?

You pay for the reserved capacity for the duration of the agreement, regardless of whether the resources are actively being used.

Are Slurm Reservations cost-efficient?

While the resource cost is identical to consumption rates, the primary value is the “VIP” priority, ensuring your work is never delayed by shared demand.

Can I terminate the reservation before it ends?

Yes, final billing will cover usage through the month until the termination date.
Ex: If you choose to terminate a non-recurrent reservation on the 8th of August, 2026, you will be charged 8 days of usage for the reservation of the month of August, 2026.

Can I request a reservation that does not meet the $500 minimum?

No, the reservation has to meet the $500 minimum.

Can the $2,800 subsidy be used for reservations?

No, since a reservation is both a guarantee of priority and a reservation of resources for exclusive use, the researcher must be held accountable for funding.

How long is the max reservation?

The max reservation is 1 year (52 weeks or 365 days).

What happens if I don’t use my reservation?

Unused reservations result in resources that sit idle, and you will be billed for the duration and resources reserved.

When would my reservation start?

Reservations start on the 1st or 15th of the month.

How many resources can be reserved?

All reservations beyond a single server require director approval.  The total reservations for Compute2 are limited to 50% of the general resources.
