As hardware components of Storage1 near the end of life, RIS will begin migrating allocations from Storage1 to Storage3 over the next three years. Allocations on the oldest hardware components (filesystem1) will begin in April 2026. Impacted users will receive additional communications prior to their cutover date as batch lists are scheduled.
πͺπ»Benefits of Storage3:
- Storage3 provides twice the performance.
- Reduces operational complexities.
- Includes off-site backups and disaster recovery capabilities.
β Our priority:
- Minimize disruption.
- Ensure a smooth transition to Storage3.
- Continue to offer support for your research storage and computing needs during this transition.
- Provide additional communications leading up to the to-be-scheduled migration date.
βοΈ Impact:
- SMB Mount Points: //storage1.ris.wustl.edu/example1 β //storage3.ris.wustl.edu/example1
Compute Data Path:/storage1/fs1β/storage3/fs1- Cutover outage is Friday – Monday of the weekend on which the allocation will be migrated. If there is Archive associated with the allocation it will be unavailable during this time.
π’ Actions to take
- Confirm whether your allocation qualifies for this phase of migrations.
- Coordinate with your sponsor regarding migration planning to Storage3.
- Contact us at the RIS Service Desk with questions or concerns.

FAQ
No, filesystem2 is still under support and will not be migrated this year.
Condos will be migrated as part of a separate effort.
No, Storage2 allocations will not be migrated.
Yes, Compute1 and Compute2 are compatible with all RIS Storage services.
Weekly migrations will start in April 2026. Additional communications will be sent prior to the migration date.
You may opt out of the RIS-managed migration to storage3, but data must be moved to another solution by the end of life date defined in the project milestones.
SMB mount points and data paths will need to be updated to reflect Storage3.
RIS will strategically schedule migrations based on a variety of factors to minimize disruption and maximize efficiency. If the scheduled date is not ideal, you can request to be moved at a later date.
Yes, Compute services, scratch, non-migrating storage allocations (except Archive), and home directories will remain accessible.
Yes, each research faculty member is qualified for 5TB of Active storage toward one allocation on RIS Storage Services.
